The Hay Barn is a large and flexible space, easily accommodating events of up to 180 people any time of year. For cold-season events, the Hay Barn stays nice and warm with radiant floor heating, offering your guests a comfortable respite from Santa Cruz’s notoriously wet winters. Sliding barn doors permit ample airflow through the vast interior without sacrificing the warmth and comfort of the indoors.
Each Hay Barn event rental features:
- 2500 square feet of indoor venue space
- 1500 square feet of outdoor event space
- a small kitchenette
- an Apple TV
- a projector and projector screen
- indoor bathroom facilities with two ADA accessible stalls
- 80 black chairs
- 15 five-foot tables
- 4 six-foot tables
- a small conference room

Rental Policies
Due to the high demand for weddings between June and October, the Hay Barn is only available to non-profits and government organizations for weekend rentals between November and May. To qualify for non-profit or government rental rates, the event must be official business of the organization, and the event holder must provide proof of the organization’s status as a non-profit or government organization.
To request a reservation, please contact the Hay Barn events team (via form or email) with the event details, including the prospective date, type of event, and guest count. The Hay Barn events team will contact you to confirm availability and schedule your event. Rentals are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis and are confirmed upon receipt of a non-refundable $500 holding deposit and a signed copy of the rental and use agreement (provided to you by the Hay Barn events team).
The Hay Barn is considered a self-serve, “leave-no-trace” space. The event holder is responsible for general cleanup after the event. The Hay Barn does not provide event staffing, coordination, or catering services. Event set-up, clean-up, and rental delivery must occur within the scheduled rental period.
Beer, wine, and sparkling wine can be served. Hard alcohol is only allowed if served by a licensed and insured professional bartender or caterer. Event holders are welcome to bring in their preferred caterers and other event vendors so long as they adhere to UCSC’s insurance requirements. We maintain a list of pre-approved vendors we work with frequently for your convenience. Contact us for more information about our vendor requirements.
